  • ~Fracture and a Photog Question~

If you are here to help with my photog question, feel free to scroll to the bottom

    and THANKS for your input!

    Avery fractured her clavicle.

She earned brownie points around here for her toughness.

She has a flare for the dramatic

so there’s always a bit of questioning

    when we’re told

the world’s coming to an end

    or

    “I’m dying”

    or

“Yes! He did it on purpose”

She fell off the bed in the middle of the night.

Brad did an x-ray the next day and lo and behold….

    a nasty little fracture.

She was not happy about the rather unattractive black sling

so Mrs. Mande fixed it up for her.

We call it the bling sling. laughing

    She’s been a little trooper.

My sweet sister took my two big kids to her house for a couple days and let me just say……

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN TWO KIDS VS. FOUR KIDS!

    For real.

    I wouldn’t trade a single one of mine but it’s simple…….

    More is more.

Avery is lost without them so Ailee helped keep her company.

Brad gave me a Canon 7D for our anniversary.

I haven’t had a lot of time to play with it and tomorrow our July 4th festivities begin.

What is a good setting for shooting moving, multiple kids outside in decent light?

And then the same question for indoors.

I make the most mistakes with multiple subjects. Without fail, someone is not in focus.

    My lens is an 18-135.

  • Shoot a couple on automatic and see what settings the camera chose, then work from there. Or put it on Aperture priority and raise the f stop up to maybe 22 to get a deeper depth of field.

  • poor avery… bless her heart! we try and TRY as parents to keep our kids safe, eh. then they go and FALL OUT OF BED while they’re sleeping!! sheesh. ;) that is THE fanciest sling i’ve ever seen. quite the accessory.. she just might start a phenomenon!

about the shots. i’d say what dan did about shooting on av. let the camera do the work for you. and i don’t understand all the f-stop lingo quite yet myself, but i have heard if you bump it up that that does give more focus. i guess w/ one subject you want shallow depth of field, lower f stop. and w/ more than one, a deeper depth – so higher.

i usually google stuff like that too. there’s tons of tutorial’s about better pictures.

and yaY on a 7D. i’ve heard they’re awesome. video ability and everything… i think they shot alot of the hunger games on 7D’s, if i remember correctly! =)

    and – - HAPPY anniversary!!

  • Avery has the most beautiful eyes, and the most mischievous smile! I hope she heals quickly. Sorry for her ouchie! I am no help at ALL with your camera question. I just have a simple point and shoot. I go to the sites of other talented people to enjoy nice photos!

  • Poor little one with the cast!! She must be a trooper, because she’s all smiles and cuteness in every one of those pictures!! Is your DH a doctor??

Note: Be aware that bumping your F-stop “up” will also reduce the amount of light going to the sensor which will make your picture darker, so don’t go too drastic on that. :)

I don’t know how much you know about photography-but remember when you are making adjustments to your settings it’s ISO, Aperture and Shutterspeed. :) If you’re shooting kids- you will want to make sure your shutter speed is fairly fast (especially outside- otherwise it will overexpose). For outside try a general setting of ISO:100/ Shutter: 125 and Aperture approx 8-11. This is not a science, but there are general rules. ;)

For inside you will want to “up” your ISO, lower your shutterspeed a little and probably open up your aperture (by going to a lower #.

Not sure if that helps at all? I usually shoot on all Manual- so, I have to adjust all 3 settings, but if you shoot on AV (aperture priority) you will not have to manually set everything. It really pays off to understand the settings so that you can preempt the camera from making all of your decisions. :)

  • Shooting in Manual can be so frustrating, but once you start to figure it out, you’ll love it!
BUT shooting in AV can be great as well, especially if you don’t have time to figure out what all your settings need to be.
Like the others said, the higher your f-stop, the more of your picture will be in focus; a smaller f-stop will mean less of your picture will be in focus.
Also, the higher your shutter speed, the less blur there will be in your pictures. If this is your major concern, you may want to shoot in TV which gives shutter speed priority.
Hope this helps a bit :)

ps. love the bling sling! what a creative and fun idea!

  • Poor girl! My sister broke her clavicle two summers ago…she said it hurt so bad.
Hope Avery is feeling better soon.

You have the most beautiful girls!
    Happy 4th of July. =)

  • Looks like Avery is all blinged up for sure! Hope she get’s better soon! For being hurt she sure looks like she’s having a blast. Funny how when you take away the older kiddos the younger kids don’t know what to do since they’re so use to tagging along with the others. :)
I have a 7D and a lot of times will shoot on (p) if I’m not sure what settings to use. I just like that setting because the camera sets what’s good and then I can always change things if I don’t like it. It’s like in between doing it all on auto (the green box) and Manual (M)

  • oh no! how IS she feeling by now? i do know that she had the best of tlc and ortho care! :)
can’t help with a camera question… although i can use this moment to announce my need for a new one!
something that DOESN’T come from a bubblegum machine…this time.
and your words about “more is more,” hahaha.yes. i know. love that.
