Then And Now
We used to actually pop popcorn on the stove. Add our own salt, melt a little butter, and drizzle.
A phone was a rather bulky thing that hung on a wall with a really long curly cord. I have images of my Mom at the stove, phone on one ear, with that long cord stretched all the way across the kitchen. I used to swing it like a jump rope.
My memories of a computer consists mostly of learning “boot” and “DOS”.
Wanted to watch The A-Team? You had to be IN your den, ready to watch AT 8:00 Friday night. There was no pausing or rewinding live television.
Christmas lists were a result of hours spent thumbing through the Sears catalog. Now, between infomercials of Pillow Pets, or toysrus.com, who needs a catalog?
We had to roll down the car window. Not “push a button it down” but manually crank the roller! ( I do remember once having a big sedan with electric windows. It felt fancy.)
In the summer, we slept with our windows open.
Kids had their birthday parties at home. We played games like balloon toss or tug of war and ate cake.
That was it. And it was so much fun.
We fought over who got to sit on the “hump”. (aka: the armrest in the front seat in the Buick) Seat belts?? Nah.
~What a difference some years make~Could be a good look for me. Brad might not agree but I think there’s potential here!

oh, goodness yes! i’m remembering ALL these things too – no seat belts, imagine!!!
amazing how things change but somehow we feel we never do. ha ha. wrinkles. flab??? who me??
maybe if we DID have some manual things left to do – like even roll down car windows we’d have less flab!!! probably same amount of wrinkles though cause all that wind would flap the skin and wrinkle us even faster!!
you’re adorable. and this was a fuN post.
happy 4th!!~ i know it’s your favorite.
love you.
ps. did you see the new a-team yet? i actually really liked it… for once a remake that wasn’t completely stupid!
Some of these things still apply to us. Silly, I know. We’re a little behind the times.
I remember road trips in the station wagon where Mom and Dad would lay the back seat down, and we could all stretch out – as much as you could with five kids- and sleep in the back going down the highway. I often wish we could do that today. (I mean lay the back seat down FOR THE KIDS….not sleep with all five of my siblings in the back seat of my parents vehicle!!!! Didn’t want you to get mixed up!!!)
Modern conveniences are great…but i think sometimes they steal the fun and make us all a little more stressed in the process. I definitely remember the
days of only 1 tv in the house, that only consisted of 3 channels! Definitely a lot less tv watching going on! I am all about air-conditioning (esp here in the
south) but there is certainly something wonderful about cool mornings and waking up to the sweet sounds of birds singing! Even cell phones are great but
sometimes I would just rather NOT know that the coach has called an extra practice and wants my child there right in the middle of dinnertime! Ha! My kids
actually LIKE it when the power goes out! They think it is so much fun to light candles and sit around in one room playing board games! Wonder why we don’t
do that more often when the power is on?? We still have our birthday parties at home and my kids friends think is great because it is something they rarely
get to do!! haha! yes, years do make a difference! Thanks for a look back at “the good ‘ol days”!!
I loved this! I remember my mom “tethered” to the phone, too, and we always got in trouble for wrapping ourselves up in it when she was talking! There’s a great email I received once about being a little girl in the 70s- wearing those fuzzy yarn ribbons on our pigtails, watching the “Donnie and Marie” show, and strapping metal roller skates to our tennis shoes! I have wonderful memories of the way things were when I was little.
Happy 4th to you and your family!
What fun to take a walk back in time and remember these…. the sears catalog was like my favorite past time. I did some serious dreaming and drooling over those pages.
Some of these we still do too… and i really don’t want to lose the simplicity of them for our kids to learn and remember.
Happy 4th wkend to you and your beautiful family.
Stacey, I agree. potential indeed. but girl. you could pull off any era’s do. You are so pretty.
Love this! Me too, about it all! I remember standing on the hump, long phone cords and birthday parties where kids got dirt on themselves.
I also recall walking to school up hill BOTH ways in 3 feet of snow and gasp. we even had to take turns with the boots. kidding. that’s what MY parents remember! it’s all changing and going by soooo fast.
Have a great weekend! love ya.

No but I want to see it! We loved that show. It was one of the few shows we were allowed to watch!

You are too kind
I thought about the walking in the snow bit….almost put that in….great minds think alike!
Makes me feel old, but yes, I do remember.
